So that was 2017 huh? I swear that just before I blinked we’d been discussing 2016, but I guess until someone figures out how to slow down time (highly unlikely to be me guys) that’s the way the years are going to roll on.
2017 has been a mind-blowingly excellent year for me, but a very different one too. Where the last few years have been really focused on growing Lazy Girl Fitness, 2017 was a massive year for me in my personal life, with LGF needing to take a back seat at times. So as usual, I’m going to take a little look back at the year that was, but this time you’ll probably notice there’s a slightly different flavour to my memorable moments…
Got engaged…
Back in June, on a deserted beach in Portugal, my best friend asked me to marry him (spoiler alert: I said yes). If you’ve been following the blog for a while you’ll have read about my journey (sorry to use that word but it’s quite accurate) to happiness and contentment – both within myself and in relationships of all kinds – over the past few years. I used to look at couples who were best friends with a complete lack of comprehension, having never experienced it for myself. Now I understand, and I feel incredibly lucky to have found it for myself.
… and then got married
FYI folks: five months is not the optimum amount of time to plan a wedding, particularly if you’re planning a second wedding and working multiple jobs at the same time. But with a lot of support, some sleepless nights (and despite a couple of stress-induced illnesses), we made it there with smiles on our faces! And even better, we had the most incredible day we could ever have imagined. I mean, I knew it would be a special day, but I honestly never imagined that it would be so much F U N! I’ve never felt anything like the love that surrounded us that day and am so excited for round 2 in India at the end of January.
Appeared on Sunrise
At the end of August I was super lucky to be invited onto Sunrise to be part of a segment on how Instagram can help you to build your business. It all happened very quickly (probably lucky as there was minimal time for nerves) and it was a big bucket list item I got to tick off. I absolutely loved it, and hope that 2018 brings more opportunities for me to step outside my comfort zone!
Opened up about my eating disorder
I’ve wanted to share the story of my eating disorder for quite a while now, but somehow every time I sat down to write it the words just wouldn’t come out. Even though it’s been many years since I was in the midst of it, there’s a level of vulnerability to opening up about it that I guess I’d never felt ready for. Earlier this year though, I finally sat down and found a way to tell the story that felt really honest and true to me, and I did it because I hope there’s something in there to help anyone going through something similar.
Travelled. Travelled. Travelled.
I have been so incredibly lucky to have done quite a bit of travel here and overseas this year. In January we headed to New Zealand for the wedding of two very close friends, in May Karn surprised me with a trip to Uluru and in June we headed to Spain and Portugal. We also snuck up to Byron for a couple of days after our Sydney wedding and there were a few trips home to Grafton of course too. There’s nothing like visiting new places to remind you of what a big, wide, wonderful world there is out there… and to remind you of how much you love home too.
Fell in love with Pilates
Anyone who’s been following Lazy Girl Fitness for a while knows that I am a massive fan of a high intensity workout, but over the past 12 months I have fallen deeply in love with Pilates. Maybe it’s age (how depressing) but this time last year I was really starting to feel some aches and pains from all the jumping and running I’d been doing. A change of focus to Pilates (with a little HIIT thrown in of course!) and my body is feeling a different kind of strong. Like, don’t ask me to lift anything crazy heavy for you right now, but yes I can plank for dayzzz.
Now I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, but I do have a few goals in mind to help me refocus on Lazy Girl Fitness in 2018. I’ve really missed sitting down to write regular blog posts, and I’m determined to carve out time each week to get back to it in 2018. So thank you for sticking with me this year, and for sharing all the moments – big and small. I’m really excited for 2018, and you are a very special part of that.
Sending lots of love out to the universe – here’s to a meaningful 2018!
Jess xx
