Five Fit Minutes with… The Shrinking Hubby

I think that Five Fit Minutes could be my new favourite thing.

This week I got to chat to Alix Toynton of The Shrinking Hubby. I first had her on the blog waaaaaay back when (right HERE to be exact), but at the time our focus was really on her husband Andrew, their history and The Shrinking Hubby story. This time it was fun to learn more about the lovely lady herself, to find out more about her workout loves, loathes and everything in between. And the key takeout? She is TOUGH. Anyone who loves HIIT is a winner in my books, and when they can also cook like this gal? Next. Level. Awesome.

Now grab your tea or coffee, sit back, relax and take five (fit) minutes with Alix…

Name: Alix Toynton
Occupation/where do you work? Mum to 3 girls (8, 6, 4 years old)/ Author of The Shrinking Hubby/ I also help out with our family property development business – life is busy, busy, busy!
What does your weekly exercise routine look like? I train 6 times a week – 3 sessions with my trainer (usually in a group of 2-3) and then I train by myself or with friends another 2 times. I also do a weekly Pilates class. I love the combination of weights and cardio and find the Pilates very grounding – I have noticed a huge improvement in my core strength since I started at the beginning of the year.
What’s your fave place to workout? These days I have been spending a lot of time working out in my garage! I love it because it means I can train with my hubby rather than having to juggle the kids to get to the gym and it’s a fun thing to do together.
What’s your fave music to work out too? Anything upbeat and recent.
Describe your workout fashion style: – I am very conservative! Black leggings, a brightly coloured Lorna Jane crop top under what is usually a black singlet. And I never train without my Lululemon black headband.
Someone tells you they are too tired/lazy/unmotivated/busy to work out. What do you say in return? Honestly – I find it hard to relate! I have always loved my exercise, and that has motivated me to make it an integral part of my life during whatever stage I was going through – whether it was full time work or full time mum to a newborn. I have trained with all three of my babies as newborns – I would bring them in their pram to group sessions outdoors while they napped peacefully. They got the benefit of fresh air and I got some me-time. It was fantastic! Even now I am still having to find ways to be flexible because of the kids and their schedules. I believe that you can always make time to exercise, I know people who get up at 4am to fit it in. It is amazing just how much a regular training schedule can make you feel the opposite of tired and lazy.
Your favourite post-workout meal? Definitely my egg and veggie scramble after an early morning workout – with a bulletproof coffee of course. The scramble is so simple and delicious – I fry up some chopped leek in some coconut oil and/or butter or ghee and throw in some asparagus, broccoli, zucchini and tomato. Whisk 2 beautiful organic free range eggs through and sprinkle some chilli on top. It is so delicious and keeps me full for hours!
Favourite exercise? I do love a good abs circuit – no pain no gain right?!
Least favourite exercise? Ummmm box jumps, high knees, skipping, burpees, urgh
If you could only do one type of exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be? Definitely a high intensity weighted circuit – gives you the best post-workout high!
And finally…. what is your favourite thing about being fit? I love watching my body lean out and change, I love feeling energised and powerful, I love the people I train with, it’s just the best!

p.s If you want to die happy, you must try this apple and rhubarb crumble. I can’t even find the right words.

Have a fabulous weekend, Team!
