I love training outdoors for a thousand reasons, but there’s no denying a couple of minor annoyances. One is the weather (if anyone has Mother Nature’s contact details please let me know) and the other is the havoc it can wreak on my skin if I’m not careful. I’m guessing that many of you have had similar issues, so I spoke to Lisa Hody, Manager of Thaspa (my absolute fave spa in the Sydney CBD) to get her top five tips for ensuring our skin stays healthy when we’re training outdoors. If you’re in the area you should book yourself in for a treatment – you’ll walk out feeling a million bucks, I guarantee it.
Lisa’s Top Five Tips for Healthy Summer Skin
1. Sunscreen
This is my number one before I leave the house – not only when I’m training, but anytime I’m going outdoors. Make this your priority and it will help to prevent your skin burning and ageing prematurely.
2. Hydration
Always use a hydrating moisturiser underneath sunscreen to hydrate your skin and keep moisture locked in. Drinking adequate amounts of water is also key – what we put into our body is just as important as what we put on our skin topically.
3. Protective Clothing
Wearing a hat when working out in the sun helps to prevent your face and scalp from burning (just because we have hair doesn’t mean we can’t burn). Sunglasses and clothing are also important – when we’re swimming we sometimes don’t realise our skin is burning because the water is keeping us cool.
4. Cleansing
if you’re a swimmer it’s important to wash the salt and chlorine from your skin to avoid dehydration. Always use a hydrating body wash and a good cleanser (to suit your skin type) on your face.
5. Stay Out of the Sun (when possible)
There are certain times throughout the day that UV rays are stronger (roughly 10am to 3pm) so avoid direct sunlight during this period when possible. Find yourself some shade or – even better – train early in the morning or once the sun has gone down
