We all know that what we put IN our body has a huge impact on the health of our skin, but how often do we stop to think about the things we are putting ON our body? If you’re anything like me, not often enough. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, mainly because it’s just not practical with the amount of exercise I do. But I thought the products I was using were good quality – I was certainly paying enough for them.
The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I wasn’t focused on the right things when it came to my makeup. So I started researching natural makeup and came across Ere Perez. Ere Perez is a local brand – their head office is actually just up the road from me in Bondi – and their products are natural, vegan, cruelty-free and free from nasties (plus the packaging is gorgeous). Over the past couple of months (as my products have run out) I’ve started switching over to the Ere Perez range and I’m loving it – the all-natural ingredients and light feel makes it wearable when I’m exercising, without giving me that cloying feeling.
I’ve also been lucky enough to spend a little time with some of the Ere Perez team, and I love that I can confidently say that their people genuinely reflect their brand – kind, generous, natural, and just overall legends. But we all know I’m no expert when it comes to beauty products, so instead I thought it made sense to introduce you to someone who is! Katiana Salinas is Ere Perez’s training and development manager – as well as being a nutritionist and health coach – so she’s kind the perfect person to help out, right? I sat down with her to learn more about the product and why it’s just so damn good…
Tell us a little about Ere Perez
Ere Perez is an Australian owned natural cosmetics brand that was started in 2004 by Ere Perez. It began with a single product – the almond oil mascara – and has now grown into a suite of products, all designed to nourish the skin. As creative director, Ere pours her knowledge, energy and passion into the creation of every product, and prides herself on offering affordable cosmetics that get results without sacrificing our health or that of the environment.
What is your role within Ere Perez?
I run training and development in Australia, Singapore and Mexico, which means that it is my responsibility to ensure that everyone who works with our product is well trained and that the Ere Perez displays are as they should be. Because we are a boutique company I also get the opportunity to work across other facets of the business, including social media.
Where and how are Ere Perez cosmetics made?
Each Ere Perez product features a star ingredient (i.e beetroot lip tint, almond oil mascara), so it depends what this ingredient is as to where the product is made. Most are made in Mexico.
Where are Ere Perez cosmetics available?
Health Food Shops, spas, pharmacies and gift shops. [Find a list of retailer locations here].
What is your favourite thing about Ere Perez cosmetics?
The values that I share with Ere Perez. I am a nutritionist, so a healthy lifestyle is very important to me. Ere Perez products make it easier to live this lifestyle, while not sacrificing on quality. I love that each product has a star ingredient that is a skin-nurturing food. It’s perfect for my sensitive skin and sensitive eyes.
Tell us more about the relationship between food and cosmetics.
Our skin is the biggest organ the body has. We all know it’s important to eat healthily, but it’s a lesser known fact that we should be feeding our skin well too. We absorb up to 60-90% of products that we put on our body through the skin, so it’s important that these products are nourishing. Our products contain ingredients that are sourced ethically, and will help nurture and heal your skin at the same time as giving you the coverage and/or colour you need.
Is the shelf-life of your product affected by the all-natural ingredients?
The shelf-life of our product is generally three years. Once open it varies from one to two years depending on the product. As with food, dry products will last longer than wet ones. All Ere Perez products contain natural preservatives to help them last longer.
What is your all-time favourite Ere Perez product and why?
I am struggling between the almond oil mascara and the translucent corn powder – I can’t live without them! The Almond Oil mascara is perfect for my sensitive eyes and helps my eyelashes grow! And the the translucent corn powder helps give my face a matte finish, sets my makeup and absorbs the oil I produce during the day (I am usually running between the office and stores). Plus it help me so much with my problem-skin – I am totally in love with the corn powder.
What would you suggest as the top three Ere Perez products to keep in your gym kit?
Waterproof mascara – so you won’t sweat it off
The carrot balm – comes in a range of colours just perfect for giving your lips and cheeks a healthy glow
Beetroot tint – use it sparingly for a softer colour or more freely for a vibrant colour.
What is your number one beauty tip?
Makeup should be used to enhance our natural beauty, not as a cover up.
