I want to let you in on a little secret… there’s no such thing as being ‘naturally fit’. Fit people are just regular people who make a conscious decision to get fit, and to do the best they can for their body and mind. It’s not always an easy decision, but fit people know that being fit, healthy and happy is the best reward out there.
But have you ever wondered how exactly they do it? What it is that they do differently to everyone else? Well, wonder no more, because I’ve put together a list of things that fit people do to become (and stay) fit people.
1. They Find Reasons to Move (instead of reasons not to)
Whether it’s getting off the bus a couple of stops early, getting up from their desk every hour, volunteering to run to the shops for milk, taking the dog for a walk or getting on the floor to play with their kids, fit people choose to get fit and to move. They know that movement is key to good physical and mental health and they’re always looking to do more of it.
2. They Know That Something Is Better Than Nothing
Fit people understand that finding an hour (or even half an hour) to work out isn’t always possible. So they arm themselves with a collection of shorter, high intensity workouts such as this 10-minute HIIT or 4-minute ad break workout and they squeeze in movement wherever they can!
3. They Know When to Ask For Help
As I mentioned right at the start, fit people aren’t born fit. They’re human (just like you!) and as such they had to work hard to get fit, and they still have off days. The difference is that fit people recognise when they’re having an off day, and they know how to work around it. It might mean enlisting their partner to look after the kids so they can work out in peace for 45 minutes, asking a friend to work out with them, or maybe they recognise that they’ve hit a plateau and need a PT to push them to the next level.
Fit people know that good food nourishes their body and mind, and allows them to perform better each day. They understand the importance of a balanced diet, and they understand the positive effects that it has on their training, their mood, their body and their overall life.
5. … But They Also Indulge Guilt Free
What’s the point in working out if you can’t enjoy a little dessert now and then? Fit people aren’t robots – they’ve got a weakness for dessert (or cheese or wine or bacon) somewhere in there! Fit people don’t abstain from all the good things in life indefinitely, but they understand the difference between a ‘sometimes’ food and an ‘everyday’ food. And when they choose to indulge they do it guilt-free.
Fit people don’t rely on alcohol for a good time. They catch up with friends over long walks, they join bootcamps and run clubs, they have active picnics in the park with other families and they’re even confident enough to go on dates without alcohol. Groundbreaking, right?
7. They Spend Time with Other Fit People
Have you ever noticed that fit people tend to have fit friends? We all enjoy the company of like-minded people and fit people are no different. Fit people encourage each other to live well and to be the best versions of themselves. And having a workout buddy who’s also your best buddy, confidante and maybe even partner? That’s pretty special!
Are you a fit person? What decisions do you consciously make each day to get fit, stay fit and be healthy?
